Helicopter Pilot Joel

INTRODUCE YOURSELF

My name is Joel, I’m 35 years old and currently living in Warwickshire. I also run my own security and automation company and cover the whole of the UK.

WHAT TYPE OF FLYING DO YOU DO? HOBBY FLYING, UTILITY, CHARTER?

After many years of not being able to get my PPL because of my eyesight prescription and having to wear glasses, I had almost given up in trying to get my licence. Then in 2015 after 7 years I got my medical for a LAPL and got my licence in 3 months at Central Helicopters in Nottingham.

HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU HAVE?

In total I have almost 500 hours from flying both in an R22 and an R44.

WHAT TYPE RATINGS DO YOU HOLD?

I hold my rating in an R44.

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TIME AS A PILOT AND WHAT MADE IT SO MEMORABLE?

To be honest I have so many favourite memories, one of the biggest being the day I passed, however since then one of things I really wanted to do was the London Heli lanes. Thanks to the training I got from Arcus Helicopters I finally got to fly over London and have since then done it many times. The first time I flew down the Thames looking over all the sights of London blew me away and is by far my favourite place to fly.

WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST SOLO FLIGHT?

2015 at Nottingham heliport with my first cross country to turweston flying past Silverstone race track.

IS THERE ONE ITEM YOU ALWAYS TAKE FLYING WITH YOU?

I always take my GoPro out flying with me, even tho most times I don’t get anything, every now and then I will get a great shot.

HOW COME YOU DECIDED TO FLY HELICOPTERS AND NOT PLANES?

I have always loved helicopters and I think the main reason I decided to not go down the route of planes is for the freedom to land in so many different places in a helicopter and not just airports. I get to land at Hotels, peoples gardens, anywhere that is legal and has enough room. I have even picked my daughter up from school before in the helicopter.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORST FLYING EXPERIENCE?

I haven’t really had any bad flights. I always plan properly first, check the weather and thoroughly check the helicopter before flying.

IF YOU WEREN'T IN AVIATION, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'D YOU BE DOING?

When I’m not flying, I’m running my company which takes up most of my time so I would probably still be doing that.
